Week 1, Day 7
We busted rocks all day. Sore hands and many blisters but the walls are almost done and the rocks are small enough for the floors. I can’t tell you how great it was to hear Peter say, “It is good,” while looking at the rocks we’d pounded on all day. Great relief.
Before we left this morning, we had doughnuts at the Hovingh’s house. Who are the Hovingh’s? They are the missionary couple that hosted us during our stay in Kenya. Jason grew up in Kenya and Lisa is from Michigan. They are awesome. They were both made for this. Jason is basically Kenyan.
Anyway, at breakfast that morning we experienced God’s creation in a couple of very exciting ways. The monkeys were climbing all over the acacia tree behind their house. Now you have to understand that monkeys and zebra in Kenya are like squirrels to us here. They are everywhere. But to us, they were rare.
There were also these little birds feeding at a feeder in a nearby tree. When you held your hand up with a worm in it (they had worms right there in a little box) the birds would come and take them from your hand. Very cool experience.
But before all of that, I climbed up to the top of the ridge above the Hovingh’s house and looked down into the valley. It looks like the garden of eden. There are acacia trees everywhere. The morning sunlight hitting the trees is incredibly beautiful. It is an amazing place. I will share the story of how it came to be later. Here is the view:
Amateur pictures never really do a view justice. But no wonder they challenged us to memorize Psalm 19 this week. It starts, “The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.”
Praise God!
Brian
